New Drilling Begins at Shiwashok Oil Field as KRG Reviews Plans to Resume Exports

Shiwashok oil field operations have entered a new phase as authorities begin drilling new wells and conducting technical inspections in preparation for a potential restart.

The mayor of Koya district confirmed that work has resumed at the field, located between Koya and Taq Taq. However, he stressed that the full restart of Shiwashok oil field operations depends on a final decision from the Kurdistan Regional Government’s Ministry of Natural Resources.

On Monday, Feb. 23, 2026, Koya Mayor Tariq Haidari stated that the KRG has dispatched several technical committees to assess the site. These teams have begun evaluating infrastructure and reviewing production capacity. Moreover, companies have drilled a number of new wells in anticipation of renewed activity.

Haidari explained that authorities aim to prepare the field for oil exports. Nevertheless, he clarified that no official timeline has been announced. “Some employees and engineers have returned to their positions,” he said. “But the final decision rests with the Ministry of Natural Resources.”

Shiwashok oil field operations have remained suspended for nearly five years, according to local officials. The prolonged halt followed broader disruptions in the Kurdistan Region’s energy sector. Now, preparations signal cautious optimism about a possible return to production.

The Shiwashok field forms part of the larger Taq Taq oil block. At its peak, the field held the capacity to produce approximately 150,000 barrels per day. Therefore, its potential reactivation could significantly contribute to regional energy output.

Energy observers note that restarting Shiwashok oil field operations would strengthen local economic activity. Increased production could also support export recovery efforts if broader agreements materialize.

For now, technical teams continue inspections while awaiting ministerial approval. Officials emphasize that regulatory clearance remains essential before operations resume at full scale.

In conclusion, Shiwashok oil field operations are moving forward at the preparatory level. However, the ultimate decision to fully restart production remains pending at the ministerial level.
