ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Drones shot down over Erbil underscored the widening impact of the Iran–Israel conflict as tensions expanded into Iraqi Kurdistan on Sunday.
U.S. air defense systems, operating with coalition support, intercepted multiple unmanned aerial vehicles above Erbil near the U.S. Consulate and Erbil International Airport. The defensive actions occurred amid heightened regional tensions following joint U.S.–Israeli strikes on Iranian military sites. The interceptions prevented the drones from reaching their intended locations.
Security sources reported that the drones were part of a broader retaliatory campaign by Tehran and its allied groups after recent military operations targeting Iranian territory. While Tehran has publicly responded to the strikes with missile and drone launches across the Middle East, coalition forces in Iraq have taken measures to protect personnel and diplomatic facilities.
The Erbil International Airport area hosts U.S. personnel and has historically been a focal point during periods of regional conflict. Smoke was seen rising near the airport following the aerial activity, indicating the scale of the engagements. However, officials have not released detailed casualty or damage reports as the situation remains under review.
In response to the volatile environment, U.S. diplomatic missions had earlier issued advisories warning of missiles, rockets, or drones in Iraqi airspace and urging heightened vigilance. These alerts advised U.S. citizens to take precautions and prepare to shelter if necessary.
The interceptions near the U.S. Consulate and airport reflect the broader spillover of the Iran–Israel conflict into neighboring regions. Military and diplomatic sources continue to monitor developments closely as airspace security remains a priority amid ongoing confrontations in the Middle East.
