ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani released a message marking the anniversary of the chemical attack on Halabja. He said the tragedy was not only an attempt to destroy the Kurdish people physically, but also a crime against humanity and a brutal assault on a nation seeking freedom.
The attack took place on March 16, 1988, when the former Iraqi regime carried out a chemical strike on the city. Thousands of civilians were killed, and many more were injured. The event remains one of the most tragic moments in Kurdish history.
In his message, Barzani said Halabja stands as a living witness in the conscience of the world. He stressed that humanity must learn from the tragedy and prevent similar crimes from happening anywhere.
Barzani also highlighted the responsibility of the Iraqi federal government toward the victims and survivors. He noted that Iraq’s High Criminal Court has recognized the Halabja attack as genocide.
In addition, The president said the victims deserve proper compensation and justice. He called on Baghdad to fulfill its obligations and ensure that the rights of the victims and their families are respected.
The Halabja chemical attack remains a powerful symbol of Kurdish suffering and resilience. Each year, leaders and citizens across the Kurdistan Region commemorate the victims and renew calls for justice and recognition.
