ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – President Nechirvan Barzani said that Iran has acknowledged a recent missile strike on Peshmerga forces as a “mistake” and promised to investigate the incident.
Barzani confirmed that Tehran communicated this position following the attack. He said officials in Iran indicated that the strike was not intentional and would be reviewed.
Moreover, the president noted that the Kurdistan Region is now waiting for a formal response. He stressed that authorities expect clear findings and accountability.
The missile attack targeted a Peshmerga position earlier this week. It caused casualties and drew strong reactions from Kurdish leaders. Officials across the region condemned the strike and warned of its implications.
Barzani emphasized the importance of preventing similar incidents. He said both sides must work to avoid escalation and protect stability.
At the same time, he reiterated that the Kurdistan Region does not pose a threat to its neighbors. He has repeatedly stressed this position in past statements, highlighting a policy of neutrality in regional conflicts.
Furthermore, Barzani called on the Iraqi federal government to play its role. He said Baghdad must act to prevent violations and ensure security across the country.
