Barzani Leads Peace Talks Between Ankara and PKK

President Nechirvan Barzani continues to lead peace efforts between Ankara and PKK, using diplomacy and political outreach. His work since 2022 has shaped new talks between Turkey and the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), which announced it would end its four-decade armed struggle.

According to the presidency’s spokesperson Dilshad Shahab, Barzani used every possible channel to assist both sides. He engaged directly with Turkish leaders and indirectly with PKK figures. He also used his global diplomatic ties to strengthen the peace effort. Shahab emphasized Barzani’s consistent work in building bridges and seeking a peaceful solution.

The peace efforts between Ankara and PKK gained momentum after the PKK agreed to disarm. Its jailed leader Abdullah Ocalan called for a peaceful, democratic resolution. This change marked a major turning point in a conflict that has killed about 40,000 people.

Following the PKK’s announcement, Turkish intelligence chief Ibrahim Kalin met with Barzani and other leaders in Erbil. Their talks focused on the next phase of the process. They reviewed the role of the Kurdistan Region and discussed possible future developments.

Shahab described the discussions as positive and hopeful. He noted that Barzani helped lay the groundwork for disarmament. In fact, the first group of PKK fighters will disarm in the Kurdistan Region soon. Turkish leaders also plan to present peace measures in parliament.

Shahab stressed that Turkey’s plan, known as “terror-free Turkey,” offers real hope. He acknowledged the conflict’s deep wounds and praised all moves toward peace. He underlined that peace efforts between Ankara and PKK remain crucial for the region’s future.

Saadi Ahmed Pira from the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) said the peace plan would also reduce airstrikes in the Kurdistan Region. He believes it will politically empower Kurdish voices in Turkey.

Barzani’s involvement in peace efforts dates back even further. Before 2010, during times of war and tension, he contacted both sides. He acted openly with Turkey and indirectly with PKK leaders. His goal stayed the same: to stop bloodshed and promote peace.

Tuncer Bakirhan, co-chair of Turkey’s DEM Party, also praised Barzani’s role. He highlighted Barzani’s dedication to continuing these efforts. The DEM Party, which serves as a key mediator, continues meeting with Barzani to ensure steady progress.

Barzani’s ongoing leadership shows how much the Kurdistan Region values stability. His steady hand supports the long-term vision of peace and recovery.
