Barzani Stands Firm on Constitution, Optimistic About New Government

In a farewell meeting with Germany’s outgoing ambassador, President Masoud Barzani strongly defended the constitutional rights of the Kurdistan Region. He declared that the Region seeks nothing beyond the constitution—but will accept nothing less. The discussion took place in Pirmam, with Ambassador Christiane Hohmann and German Consul General Albrecht von Wittke in attendance.

Barzani emphasized that implementing the constitution fully remains the only viable path for strengthening ties with Baghdad. He urged a return to the principles of consensus, balance, and partnership to resolve ongoing disputes.

At the same time, Barzani shared positive news about the progress toward forming a new Kurdistan Regional Government. Recent meetings between the KDP and PUK politburos have helped build a clearer understanding. Barzani expressed hope that the new cabinet will be in place before the elections for the Iraqi Council of Representatives.

Ambassador Hohmann, in her final remarks, praised Barzani’s leadership and stressed Germany’s continued support for the Region’s constitutional status. She pointed to the presence of many international consulates in the Kurdistan Region as proof of the Region’s importance.

Hohmann also commended the Region’s achievements in stability, infrastructure, and services—especially in electricity and water—and expressed hope that other parts of the country could follow this model.

The leaders also reviewed recent political shifts and discussed further cooperation between Erbil and Berlin.
