A drone carrying explosives crashed in Rizgari, part of Erbil’s Khabat district. The Kurdistan Region’s Counter-Terrorism Directorate (CTD) confirmed the incident and reported no injuries or deaths.
Although it was armed with explosives, it caused no physical harm or damage to nearby infrastructure. Security forces immediately secured the site and launched an investigation.
This incident follows a string of similar drone attacks in recent weeks across the Kurdistan Region. Many of these have targeted vital oil facilities and infrastructure, increasing concerns about regional stability and safety.
Prime Minister Masrour Barzani recently addressed the rising threat in an exclusive interview. He stressed the need for unity and coordination to confront these attacks. He also emphasized the importance of protecting energy resources and maintaining security.
Barzani noted that investigations are underway to identify the source of these drone operations. While he hinted at knowing who might be behind them, he stated that official announcements will come from relevant authorities once confirmed.
So far, no group has claimed responsibility. However, repeated attacks on critical infrastructure—such as oil sites and Erbil airport—continue to alarm local leaders and international observers. The authorities remain on high alert.
