Duhok’s Low Crime Rate Shows KRG Security Success

Duhok province has the lowest crime rate in Kurdistan, demonstrating the Kurdistan Regional Government’s effective security policies. This low crime rate has created a safe environment for residents, businesses, and visitors alike. Experts say the province’s security measures are a model for other parts of Iraq.

Shopkeepers in Duhok feel safe leaving their stores with only a cloth covering the entrance. This unique practice shows their confidence in local security. Ubeid Shaban, a shopkeeper, said, “We are protected. No one dares to steal because security is strong. If someone tries, authorities catch them quickly.”

The Kurdistan Regional Police attribute this safety to strict regulations and active monitoring. In 2022, Prime Minister Masrour Barzani ordered the closure of unlicensed gun stores and registered over 17,000 firearms. Lieutenant Karzan Amir Ghafoor explained that these steps prevent misuse of weapons and hold owners accountable.

Visitors also notice Duhok’s calm environment. Sa’ir Ahmed, a tourist from southern Iraq, said, “Closing shops like this shows strong security and stability. We have not seen this elsewhere.” Local residents echo the sentiment, praising the consistent law enforcement and public safety measures.

This low crime rate has allowed Duhok to grow economically. Farmers benefit from stable markets, with the province now producing Iraq’s largest grape harvest. The government has also invested in infrastructure, including seven universities, 1,500 schools, and upgraded healthcare facilities.

The KRG’s Runaki Program improved electricity supply, providing 24-hour power to over 120,000 households. This project reduced dependence on private generators, supported commerce, and improved daily life. Roads, public services, and urban planning have also advanced, creating a modern and safe environment.

Analysts say Duhok’s low crime rate shows the link between security and development. When people feel safe, businesses thrive, infrastructure improves, and quality of life rises. The province now stands as a model for peaceful coexistence, economic growth, and effective governance in Iraq.
