Egypt Wins Women’s Minifootball World Cup Final in Erbil

Egypt claimed the Women’s Minifootball World Cup title in Erbil, defeating Brazil in a tense penalty shootout at Handren Stadium. The final, held on Monday, marked the first time the global tournament was hosted in the Kurdistan Region.

Six teams competed: Brazil, Egypt, Jordan, Pakistan, Lebanon, and the Kurdistan Region. In the semi-finals, Egypt overcame the host team while Brazil eliminated Lebanon. The championship clash between Egypt and Brazil drew an energetic crowd, showcasing both the event’s international reach and local enthusiasm for women’s sports.

Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani attended the final, underscoring its importance. Muhammad Dosari, head of the International Minifootball Federation, praised the smooth organization and warm hospitality. He highlighted the region’s peace and stability as key to hosting such a global event.

For Erbil, often described as one of the Middle East’s safest cities, the tournament was a milestone. The Kurdistan Regional Government has sought to promote gender equality and global engagement, with women’s football gaining increasing support through grassroots programs and school initiatives.
