Peter de Graaf, Co-Founder of Dutch company Phil & Flo, praised Erbil’s rapid development and investment climate. He highlighted significant improvements in infrastructure and business accessibility.
De Graaf noted that the Kurdistan Region offers smoother procedures for foreign investors compared to other areas. He emphasized that many Kurds returning from the Netherlands bring expertise to establish new businesses locally.
“The progress in Erbil is remarkable. Fourteen years ago, I visited, and now it has completely transformed,” de Graaf said. “The atmosphere encourages investment and cooperation.”
He focused on agriculture, stating the Region aims to reduce imports by boosting local production. “The Netherlands has centuries of agricultural experience. Here, I see eagerness to apply expertise and strengthen agriculture,” he added.
De Graaf described Erbil’s new districts, often called the “future city,” as a clear reflection of optimism and forward-looking energy. The city’s growth and infrastructure projects enhance investor confidence.
The Kurdistan Region and the Netherlands maintain strong political, economic, and cultural ties. Dutch support has included humanitarian aid, investment initiatives, and military cooperation against ISIS. Dutch companies show increasing interest in agriculture, renewable energy, and infrastructure.
The Kurdish diaspora in the Netherlands has played a key role, bringing back knowledge, expertise, and investment. De Graaf stressed that this connection strengthens bilateral economic cooperation.
The Netherlands opened a consulate in Erbil in 2009, reinforcing long-term diplomatic and trade relations. Past support, including Operation Provide Comfort in the early 1990s, contributed to stability and development in the Region.
De Graaf concluded, “The Kurdistan Region has an open market and growing opportunities. Investors from abroad can thrive and contribute to long-term growth.”
