Erbil Expands Green Spaces with Massive Tree and Flower Planting Drive

Erbil continues to grow greener each year as officials intensify efforts to improve the city’s environment. Over the past six years, authorities have planted more than 522,000 trees and 370,000 flowers across neighborhoods, parks, and roadways. This brings the total to nearly 900,000 plantings citywide.

City planners aim to meet international green space standards, with a strong focus on sustainability. The Kurdistan Regional Government’s Ninth Cabinet remains committed to expanding urban greenery, despite recent economic difficulties.

Rebin Ahmad, head of the Directorate of Parks Engineering in Erbil, explained that the city faces many environmental pressures. Rapid population growth, heavy traffic, and nonstop construction have contributed to rising pollution and shrinking natural spaces.

To address these issues, the Directorate developed a citywide green strategy based on engineering studies. Their goal is to increase green areas and improve air quality. As a result, Erbil’s green space ratio has risen by 2.5%, now reaching about 20% of the total city area.

Environmental activist Ismail Dashti applauded the progress. He said greener zones have helped clear pollution and reduce dust storms. He urged residents to support the city’s green vision and protect new plantings.

In addition, officials encourage real estate developers to include parks and gardens in every project. They believe green design must be a top priority in all future construction.

The KRG continues to emphasize the importance of aligning with global standards. Officials believe these steps will create a healthier environment for future generations and ensure a more livable Erbil.
