ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Erbil Governor Omed Khoshnaw said air defense systems intercepted 17 explosive drones that targeted the province overnight.
According to the governor Erbil Air Defenses, the drones were detected and destroyed before reaching their intended targets. The interception prevented casualties and limited the damage caused by the attack.
Moreover, Khoshnaw said the drones were aimed at sensitive areas across the province. Air defense systems responded quickly and neutralized the threats in the air.
He noted that the rapid response of the defense systems helped prevent a more serious situation. Only limited material damage was reported, and no injuries or fatalities occurred.
Additionally, Security forces have launched an investigation into the attack. Authorities are working to determine where the drones were launched from and who was responsible.
Therefore, The incident comes amid rising security tensions in Iraq and the wider region. In recent days, several drone attacks have targeted locations in the Kurdistan Region.
Officials say security forces remain on high alert. Additional measures have also been taken to strengthen protection around key sites in Erbil.
Governor Khoshnaw reassured residents that the situation is under control. He added that security institutions are closely monitoring developments to ensure the safety of the province’s residents.
