Erbil Greenbelt Project Enters Construction Phase

Erbil has officially launched work on its long-awaited Greenbelt project, a major environmental initiative strongly supported by Prime Minister Masrour Barzani. The plan aims to create a wide, continuous ring of greenery around the city, beyond the 150-meter road, with a width of two kilometers.

Governor Omed Khoshnaw announced that the project will feature two separate greenbelts, each stretching 70 kilometers in length. More than ten large ponds will be built to provide irrigation for thousands of trees planted across the zone. He stressed that this will transform Erbil’s environment, improve air quality, and enhance the city’s beauty and livability.

Speaking at a press conference, Khoshnaw noted that while the project will not be completed all at once, construction is already underway in one section. The development is being carried out in stages, with each zone completed before moving to the next.

He expressed satisfaction that the Greenbelt, once only a proposal, is now becoming a reality. According to Khoshnaw, this initiative represents a new chapter for Erbil in water management, electricity efficiency, and environmental sustainability.

The governor also emphasized that the project’s success will depend on strong community support to maintain the planted areas and protect the city’s new green shield. Once completed, the Greenbelt will serve as both an ecological safeguard and a scenic attraction for residents and visitors alike.
