Erbil Launches $25 Million Road Project to Boost Tourism Growth

Erbil authorities have started a $25 million road project to link the city’s 120-meter and 150-meter ring roads. The new five-kilometer route will include landscaped medians, advanced drainage systems, and modern street lighting.

Minister of Municipalities and Tourism Sasan Awni said the project will be funded entirely through the Kurdistan Region’s investment budget and implemented by a local company. He confirmed that construction will take about 15 months and will serve as the first major arterial connection between Erbil’s two largest highways.

The project aligns with Erbil’s growing tourism sector, which has drawn over two million visitors annually since 2022. The Region’s eight-year development plan has already generated more than $7.5 billion in investments. These include new hotels, restaurants, and travel agencies that now total around 3,100 facilities.

Minister Awni also noted that about 1,000 development projects are currently underway across the Kurdistan Region. He emphasized that these initiatives rely solely on regional revenues without any financial support from Baghdad.

The Erbil road project is seen as another step in enhancing tourism infrastructure and improving city transport. It reflects the government’s commitment to building a stronger, more connected, and economically vibrant capital.
