Erbil Oil Fields Under Threat: Drone Attacks Challenge Kurdistan’s Growth

The Kurdistan Region faces serious challenges as drone attacks target its oil fields. Former Deputy Prime Minister Hoshyar Zebari warns these attacks could undermine the region’s economic and political progress. He stressed that failure to hold perpetrators accountable discourages both domestic and foreign investors.

Zebari explained that the attacks on Erbil’s oil infrastructure occurred over several days, disrupting operations and raising security concerns. He emphasized that investors need a secure environment, functioning courts, and strict law enforcement to ensure their projects can thrive.

Despite the attacks, Zebari noted that the Kurdistan Region enjoys relative stability compared to previous years. This calm has attracted investment, particularly in the oil sector, with international firms like BP and Chevron resuming operations. He highlighted that over $100 billion in investment pledges are currently in motion, combining domestic and foreign capital.

Zebari also connected the regional security context to broader political changes. He cited the gradual disarmament of Kurdish groups, reforms in Syria, and state efforts in Lebanon to control militias. These trends create a more favorable environment for investment, yet rogue attacks on oil infrastructure remain a critical obstacle.

He warned that unless authorities enforce security measures and the rule of law, the Kurdistan Region’s “golden opportunity” to strengthen its economy and governance could be lost. Zebari concluded that political stability and security must go hand in hand to ensure long-term growth.

The drone attacks underscore the delicate balance between attracting investment and maintaining security. The Kurdistan Region must continue strengthening governance, enforcing laws, and protecting its strategic assets to sustain investor confidence.
