Erbil is set to develop three artificial lakes in collaboration with an Italian engineering team. This initiative forms part of the long-awaited Erbil Corniche project, aimed at improving the city’s environment, recreational spaces, and overall landscape.
Governor Omed Khoshnaw said Italian experts are preparing detailed designs for the lakes. Each lake will be strategically located to benefit different parts of the city. The first lake will sit between Shaweis and New Erbil, the second will be placed in the central area of the Corniche project, and the third will be near the Makhmour plains. Once completed, the lakes will create scenic spaces for residents, enhance urban beauty, and provide new recreational opportunities.
Omed Khoshnaw recalled that President Masoud Barzani had initially requested the implementation of the Corniche project in 2004, emphasizing its importance for preserving Erbil’s natural beauty, water resources, and environmental balance. Despite previous delays by the Iraqi government, the project has now received approval from the Kurdistan Regional Government’s ninth cabinet and reached its final preparation stage. Construction work is expected to start soon.
Alongside the lake project, Erbil’s stormwater drainage system is nearing completion. Officials highlighted that it will reduce water shortages and expand green areas across the city. These combined projects aim to improve Erbil’s climate, environmental quality, and urban living standards. Residents and visitors can look forward to a greener, healthier, and more attractive city in the near future.
