France has reaffirmed its deep and enduring relationship with the Kurdish people, describing them as “brothers in arms” in the fight against terrorism and key partners in promoting stability, democratic values, and regional cooperation across the Middle East.
French Consul General Yann Braem highlighted the long-standing partnership between France and the Kurds, particularly in the Kurdistan Region and northeast Syria. He emphasized France’s continuous role in supporting Kurdish forces in the battle against ISIS, noting that French and Kurdish fighters have stood side by side in defense of shared values.
Braem reiterated that this bond goes beyond military cooperation. “France shares principles with the Kurdish people—values of democracy, human rights, and mutual respect. This is what makes our relationship so strong and resilient.”
Recent high-level meetings have underscored the strength of this partnership. In April, the French foreign minister visited Erbil for talks with senior Kurdish officials and regional security leaders, following earlier meetings between the President of the Kurdistan Region and President Emmanuel Macron in Paris. These exchanges reflect a growing political dialogue focused on not only security but also cultural collaboration and the advancement of democratic institutions.
Braem also pointed to France’s historic ties with the Kurds, recalling the efforts of former First Lady Danielle Mitterrand, who played a key role in supporting Kurdish rights and advocating for international protection during the 1990s. Mitterrand is widely remembered in the Region for her efforts to assist the Kurdish people during a time of great need.
In addition to political and security engagement, France continues to support initiatives that promote the rights of women and marginalized communities. Braem emphasized the importance of empowering women and advancing gender equality, particularly in leadership and civil society roles.
Representing France’s broader commitment to human rights, a senior French official reiterated the country’s unwavering support for justice, accountability, and minority protection. France remains committed to combating impunity for crimes and upholding international humanitarian principles.
Through decades of support, active military and political partnerships, and a shared vision for a more peaceful and democratic region, France continues to view the Kurdish people as indispensable allies. The bond is one built on trust, shared history, and a mutual dedication to progress—one that remains vital amid ongoing regional uncertainty.
