Halabja Women Drive New Wave of Empowerment

In Halabja, women are shaping a bold new chapter of economic and social progress. Across the city, women are taking charge in government and business, proving their ability to lead and inspire change.

Female leaders now hold most of the key positions in local government. From the governor’s office to senior administration, women are at the forefront of public service. This shift shows the community’s growing confidence in women’s leadership.

In the scenic area of Hawraman, Nasrin Othman runs a thriving restaurant with her husband. Since 2012, their family-owned business has become a popular stop for tourists and residents. Nasrin proudly shared that the restaurant continues to grow and welcomes many visitors each week.

Nasrin’s success is part of a wider movement. Many women across Halabja are building their own futures, thanks to support from civil society groups. One standout organization is NWE, which focuses on the environment and women’s rights. Hero Wakil, the group’s director, explained that more than 17 women work on their team.

NWE has completed over 25 projects since 2012. Most of the beneficiaries have been women. The group helps them build businesses and achieve financial independence. Hero Wakil said their door is always open to women seeking opportunity.

Women in Halabja aren’t only leading businesses. They are shaping policy and transforming their communities. With 36 tourist attractions across the province, the rise of women-led ventures is helping to draw more visitors and build a stronger local economy.

This transformation marks more than a gender shift. It highlights how inclusive progress can redefine a city. Halabja now stands as a model for the region—where women lead, grow businesses, and shape the future.
