In the National Interest: Mandelawe Meets Nechirvan Barzani to Address Key Issues

Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani met with Mohsen Mandelawe, First Deputy Speaker of the Iraqi Parliament, to discuss pressing political and economic challenges between Erbil and Baghdad, as well as upcoming elections and national cooperation.

According to a statement from the Kurdistan Region Presidency, both sides stressed the importance of resolving Iraq’s outstanding disputes—particularly the Erbil–Baghdad disagreements—through the framework of the constitution and mutual agreements. They underlined that lasting solutions would serve Iraq’s broader stability, peace, and development.

President Barzani expressed gratitude to all individuals and parties working toward reconciliation and reiterated his support for ongoing dialogue between the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and the federal government. He emphasized the need for fair solutions to financial disputes, including the timely disbursement of salaries to public employees in the Kurdistan Region.

The meeting also covered preparations for the upcoming parliamentary elections in Iraq. Both leaders agreed on the critical role of transparent and well-organized elections in protecting democracy, ensuring stability, and strengthening Iraq’s democratic institutions.

Another focal point of the talks was the importance of fostering cooperation and partnership between Iraq’s political groups, communities, and institutions. Mandelawe and Barzani highlighted that national unity and constructive engagement among all sides would be essential for tackling the country’s current challenges and for safeguarding its long-term interests.
