Iraq Explores French Investment and Regional Stability with Kurdistan

Iraq continues to strengthen international ties as Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani met with French Ambassador Patrick Durel. Their meeting focused on improving Iraqi-Kurdish relations and encouraging French investment in the Kurdistan Region. Both leaders expressed hope for stronger cooperation in politics, trade, and diplomacy.

During their discussion, President Barzani and Ambassador Durel reviewed the current state of relations between France, Iraq, and the Kurdistan Region. They explored how French companies could invest more in Iraq and create long-term economic partnerships. French investment in Iraq could improve infrastructure, boost employment, and increase trade flows.

Barzani explained that Kurdistan welcomes French business and aims to create better opportunities for foreign investors. He also highlighted sectors like energy, construction, and tourism that could benefit from foreign expertise. Durel responded by showing strong interest in long-term cooperation, especially through private-sector projects.

Moreover, both sides stressed the need to resolve tensions between the Federal Government of Iraq and the Kurdistan Regional Government. Barzani and Durel agreed that dialogue, guided by the Iraqi constitution, is the best path forward. They emphasized that cooperation between Baghdad and Erbil remains essential for national unity.

French investment in Iraq depends on stable political and legal environments. Barzani reassured Durel that the Kurdistan Region stays committed to peaceful solutions. He underlined the Region’s dedication to protecting democratic institutions and supporting rule of law.

In addition, the leaders discussed recent events in the wider Middle East. Both shared concern over rising conflicts and growing instability across the region. They agreed that Iraq must avoid being drawn into external disputes. Instead, they want Iraq to focus on internal development and regional peacebuilding.

The meeting came at a critical moment when many regional powers are caught in tension. Barzani and Durel called for coordinated efforts to preserve calm and encourage dialogue across all borders. They warned that any further escalation could harm Iraq’s progress and peace efforts.

Iraq now looks to strengthen ties with international allies who support stability and economic growth. French investment in Iraq could help the country achieve these goals. With continued dialogue and smart diplomacy, Iraq and the Kurdistan Region hope to benefit from stronger global partnerships.
