Iraq Supports Kurdish Unity: Kurdish National Congress Gains Momentum

Iraq finds itself at the center of a major Kurdish political shift. A renewed call for unity emerged from Abdullah Öcalan, who urged President Masoud Barzani to lead a Kurdish National Congress. This appeal reflects growing efforts to end conflict and promote democratic solutions across Kurdish regions.

The Kurdish National Congress captures the spirit of this historic proposal. Öcalan’s message reached the public through DEM Party co-chair Tuncer Bakırhan. He explained that this plan offers a unique opportunity for Kurdish political progress.

Bakırhan confirmed that the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) has officially ended its armed campaign. This decision came after its most recent congress and signals a major break from years of confrontation. Instead, the group now seeks peace through politics.

According to Bakırhan, the Kurdish National Congress should unite Kurds from all four regions. He praised President Barzani’s leadership and called it vital to the congress’s success. Barzani’s involvement would bring legitimacy and help the Kurds speak with one voice.

He also noted a significant change in political attitudes. Many former critics of the peace process now support it. This growing consensus may lead to real progress if leaders continue on this path.

Supporters of the Kurdish National Congress believe it can end decades of division. Bakırhan urged people across the Kurdistan Region to back this new effort. He said every Kurd, not just politicians, must take part in shaping the future.

He also addressed Türkiye’s role in the process. Bakırhan said the Turkish government must now respond. He asked clear questions: Who receives the PKK’s weapons? Who ensures fair steps in the peace process?

These questions highlight the importance of building trust. Kurdish leaders hope Ankara responds with legal reforms, not rejection. A peaceful Türkiye benefits everyone, especially Kurds in Iraq, Syria, and beyond.

Bakırhan closed with optimism. He believes the peace process can succeed with public support. He called the potential congress a turning point for Kurdish rights.

The proposal for a Kurdish National Congress under President Barzani’s leadership may soon define a new era of unity, peace, and regional cooperation.
