Iraq’s Parliament Speaker Pushes Governance Cooperation in Erbil Talks

Iraq’s Parliament Speaker Mahmoud al-Mashhadani visited Erbil to begin talks with the Kurdistan Regional Government. He arrived with a delegation that includes Ziyad al-Janabi, who leads Iraq’s Parliamentary Integrity Committee. The group came to address major issues between Baghdad and the Kurdistan Region.

Rebar Ahmed, the Kurdistan Region’s Interior Minister, welcomed the delegation at Erbil International Airport. Shakhawan Abdullah, the Deputy Speaker of Parliament, also joined the reception. The meetings in Erbil aim to resolve long-standing disputes between the two sides.

Talks between Iraq and the Kurdistan Region now center around one focus: governance cooperation. That key phrase defines the goal of this high-level visit to Erbil. Mashhadani wants to build trust before Iraq’s next parliamentary elections. With tensions rising, both governments must show unity.

Officials plan to address disagreements about the federal budget. The Kurdistan Region has asked for fair distribution. At the same time, Baghdad demands stronger oversight. The issue continues to create political friction, especially as the elections approach.

Governance cooperation also includes how the two governments manage resources. Oil, gas, and revenue-sharing deals remain unresolved. These points often create divisions in parliament. The talks in Erbil could help set new terms for resource control and financial accountability.

Moreover, the two sides will talk about coordination on election logistics. Both governments must agree on voter registration and voting locations. Delays in this process could damage the entire election timeline. Therefore, resolving these matters early remains essential.

Governance cooperation carries extra importance now. Iraq faces public pressure across all provinces. Citizens demand fairness, jobs, and better services. The Parliament and the KRG must respond with results and stronger collaboration.

So far, the delegation has made no public statements. However, analysts expect updates after the closed-door meetings in Erbil. Sources believe both parties seek real progress, especially with the election deadline nearing.

Mashhadani’s visit to Erbil sends a strong message. He wants dialogue, not division. The Kurdistan Region also appears ready for cooperation. If both sides focus on governance cooperation, they can reduce tensions and strengthen unity.
