ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Mahmoud Mohammed, spokesperson for the KDP, has stressed that security investigations into recent attacks must produce concrete results, warning against repeating past failures.
His remarks follow a drone attack on the residence of President Nechirvan Barzani in Duhok last Saturday. The incident triggered strong domestic and international reactions.
After the attack, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani ordered the formation of a joint security committee between Baghdad and the Kurdistan Region to investigate the incident. However, no concrete steps have been announced so far.
Moreover, Mohammed warned that armed groups operating outside the law are driving Iraq toward instability. He emphasized that security committees must identify both the perpetrators and those responsible for supporting such attacks.
In addition, he cautioned against superficial investigations. He stated that if the new committee follows the same pattern as previous inquiries, it will fail to deliver meaningful results. The KDP spokesperson highlighted the need for accountability. He stressed that identifying those behind the attacks is essential to preventing further escalation.
At the same time, he underscored the importance of cooperation between Erbil and Baghdad. He noted that effective coordination is key to ensuring security across Iraq. The drone attack on President Barzani’s residence drew widespread condemnation from regional and international actors. Therefore, pressure has increased for a serious and transparent investigation.
Meanwhile, authorities in the Kurdistan Region continue to monitor the situation closely. Security measures remain heightened amid ongoing tensions. Mohammed reiterated that Iraq cannot afford ineffective investigations. He stressed that only decisive action and accountability can restore confidence and protect stability in the Kurdistan Region.
