Khabat District Gets New Water System for Forest

The Khabat district is receiving a dedicated water system to support its forest, officials confirmed.

Recently, a large number of trees in the district suffered from water shortages due to the absence of a proper irrigation system. Local authorities acted quickly to address the problem. They decided to deliver water via tankers while installing a permanent water system for the orchards. This initiative aims to prevent tree damage and ensure a reliable water supply.

Quistan Ahmed, the district governor, said the decision followed the widespread drying of trees in Khabat. “We provided water through tankers initially. Now, thanks to the support of Erbil Governorate and the Erbil Water Directorate, we are establishing a dedicated irrigation system. This will protect trees from drying out and provide a steady water supply,” he explained.

The Khabat forest, established in fifties, span more than 400 acres of land. The area has recently become popular with visitors for its agricultural and natural beauty. However, several forests have faced damage in previous years due to inconsistent water availability, affecting both local farmers and the landscape.

With the new water system, local authorities expect improved growth and sustainability for the forests. The initiative also ensures that water reaches all parts of the district efficiently, preventing shortages during dry periods. Residents welcomed the move, noting that it will safeguard the trees and support the region’s agricultural productivity.

This project highlights the importance of modern irrigation systems in preserving forests and promoting sustainable agriculture in Khabat.
