The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) officially launched the Dukan-Sulaymaniyah water project in Erbil. The $423.89 million project aims to resolve Sulaymaniyah’s chronic water shortages. Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani and Minister of Municipalities and Tourism Sasan Aouni attended the signing ceremony. HABIKA Company for General Contracting & General Trading Ltd. will implement the project.
Minister Aouni celebrated the signing, saying, “This is a major step to improve water services for Sulaymaniyah citizens.” He emphasized that the Dukan-Sulaymaniyah water project is aligned with the strategic plan of the KRG’s Ninth Cabinet under Prime Minister Masrour Barzani.
The project features a water intake station on the Little Zai River, with a total daily capacity of 480,000 cubic meters. Phase one will deliver 240,000 cubic meters per day. Two central treatment plants will purify water and improve quality. Two main transmission lines, 1,400 mm in diameter and 112 kilometers long, will connect Dukan to Sulaymaniyah. An integrated electricity network ensures reliable water delivery.
Minister Aouni highlighted other key KRG water initiatives, including the Erbil Water Rapid Supply Project, Goptepe-Chamchamal Project, and Qushtapa Water Project. Additional projects in Bardarash, Khabat, Qandil, Barzan, Akre, Darbandikhan, and Darband Rania are ongoing or near completion. Floodwater solutions in Erbil and Qursi are also part of the broader strategy.
The Dukan-Sulaymaniyah water project demonstrates the KRG’s commitment to modernizing urban water infrastructure. It will provide clean water to Sulaymaniyah and nearby towns. The project will improve water efficiency, reduce losses, and ensure equitable distribution.
Beyond water supply, the initiative creates jobs and attracts private investment. It reflects the KRG’s growing capacity to manage large-scale infrastructure projects professionally. Under Barzani’s leadership, critical services such as water, electricity, and transportation remain top priorities.
The signing marks another milestone in the KRG’s ongoing efforts to improve living conditions, strengthen sustainable development, and support long-term economic growth in the Kurdistan Region.
