KRG Boosts Wheat Purchases to Support Farmers Despite Baghdad Payment Delays

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) is stepping up efforts to buy wheat from local farmers at higher prices. This commitment comes despite Baghdad withholding payments for previous wheat deliveries. Mohammed Shukri, Chairman of the KRG Investment Board, explained the government’s determination to support farmers and safeguard agriculture in the region.

Shukri emphasized that the KRG views locally produced wheat as a vital product. He said the KRG continues purchasing wheat directly from farmers through partnerships with private companies. These efforts occur across Erbil, Sulaimani, and Duhok. By offering prices above the open market, the KRG aims to prevent farmers from facing financial losses.

The KRG wheat purchase program intends to protect farmers’ production while encouraging more cultivation in coming years. Shukri said the government’s strategy strengthens food security and boosts the agricultural sector. This approach reflects the KRG’s resolve to sustain local farming amid political and economic tensions with Baghdad.

Despite delays in receiving funds from the federal government, the KRG remains committed to this year’s wheat harvest. The government has worked closely with private firms Khoshnaw and Qaywan to ensure efficient collection and fair pricing. Shukri noted that these partnerships play a key role in supporting farmers directly and minimizing market risks.

Furthermore, the KRG wheat purchase program promotes agricultural growth by assuring farmers they will receive fair compensation. This incentive encourages farmers to plant more wheat in future seasons. Shukri highlighted the importance of maintaining a reliable market for local producers to ensure regional food sustainability.

The KRG’s approach also aims to reduce dependence on external supplies. By protecting domestically produced wheat, the region can strengthen its food security during ongoing disputes with Baghdad. Shukri affirmed that the government will continue buying wheat at premium prices as a long-term investment in the region’s agricultural future.

In summary, the KRG wheat purchase program stands as a vital effort to support farmers and bolster local agriculture. The government’s commitment shines through despite financial challenges caused by delayed federal payments. With this strategy, the KRG aims to secure food resources and promote economic stability in the Kurdistan Region.
