Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) will soon begin the Dukan-Sulaymaniyah 3 Water Project to improve access to clean water in Sulaymaniyah. The government approved a $423 million budget for the project, which aims to solve the city’s water shortage for the next 30 years.
The Ministry of Municipalities and Tourism confirmed that the signing will take place at its headquarters. Prime Minister Masrour Barzani approved the budget increase to ensure strong implementation and high-quality services for Sulaymaniyah’s residents.
The Dukan-Sulaymaniyah 3 Water Project represents a turning point for the city. For years, Sulaymaniyah has struggled with water shortages, especially during summer. The project will use water from the Dukan Dam to create a stable and reliable supply system.
By boosting efficiency and reducing losses, the new system will help the city meet growing demand. The government also plans to link the system to a modern distribution network that ensures fair access for all communities.
Prime Minister Barzani emphasized that this project is part of the KRG’s broader infrastructure strategy. Under his leadership, the government continues to invest in vital services like water, electricity, and transportation. These projects aim to improve daily life, create jobs, and support regional stability.
The Dukan-Sulaymaniyah 3 Water Project also aligns with other major initiatives across the Kurdistan Region. In Erbil, the $480 million Erbil Emergency Rapid Water Supply Project now supports over 150,000 subscribers. It draws water from the Great Zab River and adds major capacity to the city’s treatment plants. These efforts demonstrate the KRG’s commitment to long-term water security.
By focusing on sustainable planning, the KRG shows how forward-looking infrastructure can protect both communities and natural resources. Officials plan to monitor implementation carefully to ensure every dollar benefits the public. The project also attracts private sector involvement, helping strengthen local expertise and encourage future investment.
Once complete, the Dukan-Sulaymaniyah 3 project will secure water for thousands of homes and businesses. It will reduce stress on old systems, improve sanitation, and enhance public health. Above all, it proves that strategic water development can drive social and economic progress across the Kurdistan Region.
