The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has allocated three billion dinars to improve healthcare services in Sulaymaniyah, including the opening of Iraq’s first specialized cancer surgery unit, where all operations will be performed free of charge for patients.
In a major step toward advancing medical services and supporting patients, the new unit has been established at the Jamali Haji Ali Hospital, a charitable facility dedicated to providing accessible healthcare. Dr. Yad Naqshbandi, director of Hiwa Hospital, announced that the section specializes in surgical treatment for cancer patients and is now fully operational after delays caused by past financial constraints. “From now on, breast cancer surgeries will be performed free of charge, eliminating the need for patients to visit private hospitals,” Dr. Naqshbandi said.
He emphasized that this marks a historic milestone for Iraq’s healthcare system, as it is the first unit of its kind in the country dedicated entirely to cancer surgery. The facility will not only serve Sulaymaniyah residents but also provide medical care for patients from Erbil, Duhok, and other provinces.
Meanwhile, the KRG Council of Ministers, during its weekly meeting, formally approved the three-billion-dinar allocation to supply advanced medical equipment and essential materials for hospitals across the Sulaymaniyah province, reaffirming its commitment to expanding free and equitable healthcare in the Kurdistan Region.
