KRG Opens Gomaspan–Smaqoli Road to Boost Connectivity

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) inaugurated the Gomaspan–Smaqoli Road, marking a major milestone in its infrastructure development strategy. The 22-kilometer highway connects Erbil, Sulaimani, and the Raparin Administration, enhancing trade, tourism, and regional mobility.

Completed at a cost of 210 billion Iraqi dinars, the project involved over 2,000 workers and 600 machines, operating through challenging conditions to meet deadlines. Built to international standards, the modern dual-lane roadaccommodates both heavy and light vehicles, offering a safer and faster alternative to the old route that was affected by rising waters from the Gomaspan Dam.

The project includes six underpasses, three bridges, and seventy box culverts, along with safety features such as retaining walls, guard rails, and traffic signage.

Supervised directly by Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, the project reflects the government’s focus on modernizing infrastructure and improving regional integration. The KRG has prioritized key projects in transportation, water, and energy to drive long-term economic growth.

Officials said the new road will reduce travel time between Erbil and Sulaimani, attract investment in tourism, and strengthen domestic trade networks.

Prime Minister Barzani emphasized that infrastructure development is essential for building a strong, self-reliant Kurdistan that meets citizens’ needs and supports sustainable progress.
