Kurdistan and Germany have strengthened their partnership through a renewed “Letter of Intent” between the Kurdistan Region’s Interior Ministry and Germany’s GIZ agency. The agreement focuses on expanding cooperation in security, humanitarian aid, and youth development.
Interior Minister Reber Ahmed praised Germany’s continued support for the Kurdistan Region. He said the two sides have built strong and reliable relations over the years, especially during difficult times. He also thanked the German government and its consulate in Erbil for helping the region in major humanitarian and development projects.
Ahmed noted that Germany played a vital role in assisting Peshmerga forces during the fight against ISIS. He also highlighted successful projects launched with GIZ and THW, such as the “Capacity” program and “Cash for Work” initiative, which have benefited displaced families and boosted education and health services.
The new agreement marks the first official cooperation of its kind with the Interior Ministry, showing both sides’ commitment to expand their partnership. German Consul General Albrecht Von Wittke reaffirmed Germany’s support for Kurdish youth. He said Germany plans to provide training and work opportunities for skilled workers, as well as help returnees reintegrate through pilot centers in Halabja, Raparin, and Zakho.
The partnership continues to grow, reflecting Germany’s lasting role in supporting Kurdistan’s stability and development.
