Kurdistan – Canada Revives Kurdish Friendship Group Under Tom Kmiec

Canada revived its Kurdish Friendship Group in Parliament and strengthened its diplomatic outreach to the Kurdistan Region. Lawmaker Tom Kmiec took over as chair and immediately signaled a renewed commitment to deeper engagement with Erbil. His appointment energized Kurdish representatives, who welcomed Canada’s step as a meaningful boost to bilateral ties.

Shifa Barzani praised the decision and highlighted the strong support the Kurdistani community receives across Canada. She noted that the friendship group creates new opportunities for dialogue, cooperation, and advocacy. Moreover, she stressed that strong parliamentary partnerships encourage more cultural, educational, and economic exchanges between both sides.

The Kurdistani Diaspora Confederation also applauded the move. Its leaders described the group’s reactivation as an important acknowledgment of the diaspora’s growing role in Canadian society. They argued that the friendship group strengthens the bridge between Canada and the Kurdistan Region and helps expand long-term cooperation.

Tom Kmiec outlined several priorities during early discussions. He emphasized stronger political communication, more engagement on regional security issues, and broader collaboration on trade and investment. He also encouraged more parliamentary visits and exchanges to deepen understanding of developments in the Kurdistan Region.

Canadian officials expressed interest in expanding humanitarian programs and supporting reform efforts in the Kurdistan Region. Kurdish representatives welcomed this approach and called for sustained cooperation that supports stability, progress, and mutual interests.
