Kurdistan – Erbil Accelerates Landmark Gate and Road Network Project

Erbil moved forward with major construction on its new landmark city gate and the strategic road network that surrounds it. The Koya dual carriageway project now reached 35% completion, and engineers continued expanding work across several key zones. Officials stressed that the project forms a central part of Erbil’s long-term development plan, which aims to ease traffic, modernize transport links, and create a more efficient gateway into the capital.

Construction teams advanced quickly despite the area’s challenging terrain. They built multiple waterways, drainage channels, and reinforced structures to protect the road from seasonal floods and soil movement. These additions improved safety and strengthened the durability of the entire route. Moreover, planners upgraded several intersections to allow smoother traffic flow between Erbil, Koya, and surrounding districts.

Engineers also coordinated closely with urban planners to ensure the new road connects seamlessly with future expansion zones. This coordination allowed the city to prepare for long-term growth while reducing pressure on existing roads. Officials said the new gate will eventually serve as a symbolic entry point to Erbil and as a functional transport hub that supports tourism, trade, and daily commuting.

Work crews continued operating in multiple shifts as the government aimed to finish major phases of the project within the planned timeline. They emphasized that the upgraded network will shorten travel times, reduce congestion, and increase road safety for residents and visitors.
