Kurdistan Expands Forest Coverage Through Ambitious Green Belt Initiative

Erbil – The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) continues to turn environmental vision into measurable progress as reforestation efforts expand across the Region. Over the past few years, the KRG has boosted Kurdistan’s green coverage from 15% to 20%, marking a major step toward a sustainable future.

Duhok now leads the Region with an impressive 27.6% green coverage, reflecting years of coordinated work between local authorities, environmental organizations, and volunteers. Meanwhile, Erbil’s landmark Green Belt Project has become a centerpiece of the KRG’s environmental strategy. The project plans to plant seven million trees surrounding the city, aiming to cut carbon emissions by nearly 210,000 tons each year.

Prime Minister Masrour Barzani has repeatedly emphasized that combating climate change and improving public health go hand in hand. He noted that “environmental protection is not a seasonal campaign but a national duty that defines the future of our land.”

The initiative also generates new job opportunities, especially for young people and agricultural cooperatives, helping to link environmental goals with economic development. Moreover, local universities and research centers have joined the effort by studying the ecological benefits of tree planting and soil restoration.

With continued public participation and government backing, the KRG aims to expand green coverage even further, making Kurdistan a regional model for sustainable growth and ecological resilience.
