Torrential rains swept through Chamchamal and created major disruptions across the district on Wednesday. The sudden downpour overwhelmed residential neighborhoods, and water quickly entered several homes. Local families moved belongings to higher ground as the floodwater rose fast and created serious safety concerns.
Authorities immediately rushed emergency teams to the affected areas. Crews worked to clear blocked drainage channels, and they also assisted residents whose homes filled with water. The intensity of the rainfall created widespread challenges and pushed responders to redirect their efforts toward areas facing the highest risk.
The storm also shut down the Chamchamal–Sulaimani highway, which serves as one of the district’s most important routes. Drivers stopped their vehicles as water covered long stretches of the road. Police redirected traffic toward alternative routes to prevent accidents and keep travelers safe. The closure caused delays for commuters and created long lines at nearby junctions.
However, the heavy rainfall also brought one positive outcome. The Kurdistan Region’s reservoirs gained significant volumes of water, and local officials reported a noticeable rise in storage levels. This increase supports the Region’s long-term water needs and offers relief after months of dry conditions.
Chamchamal authorities continue to monitor the situation closely. They also urged residents to avoid low-lying areas and follow safety instructions until the water recedes. More weather changes may still occur, so teams remain on standby for additional support.
