Sulaimani, Kurdistan Region – Ali Hussein, a senior member of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), said recent developments in Baghdad require stronger Kurdish unity and coordination. Ali Hussein spoke during a press statement on April 14, 2026.
He addressed the situation following disputes over the Iraqi presidency selection. He explained that recent events in Baghdad have created new political challenges. Moreover, he warned that regional instability could impact the Kurdistan Region.
Ali Hussein confirmed that meetings between the KDP and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan continue. He said these discussions aim to define a clear political strategy. Furthermore, he stressed the importance of adapting to changing political conditions.
“We continue our meetings to determine our future plans,” he said. “We must decide how to respond to the current situation.”
He rejected claims that the KDP withdrew from Baghdad. Ali Hussein stated that President Masoud Barzani requested consultations with Kurdish representatives. He added that officials returned to Erbil to assess the situation and continue dialogue.
Ali Hussein emphasized that decisions will focus on Kurdish interests. He said the KDP leadership will act based on what benefits the Kurdistan Region. Therefore, ongoing consultations remain essential.
Moreover, Regarding the new Iraqi president, he clarified that the dispute does not concern individuals. He said the issue relates to political principles established after 2003. He explained that power-sharing arrangements assign key positions to different communities.
According to him, Kurds should jointly decide on the presidency. He stressed that unity strengthens Kurdish influence in Baghdad. However, he criticized attempts by some Kurdish actors to reach separate agreements with Arab parties.
He warned that such actions weaken the Kurdistan Region’s position. He added that external agreements could allow others to decide on Kurdish interests. Therefore, he urged all Kurdish parties to maintain unity.
Ali Hussein also highlighted the importance of Kirkuk. He described the city as central to Kurdish identity and history. He stressed that the KDP has never compromised on Kirkuk.
Furthermore, he addressed the issue of appointing a governor for Kirkuk. Ali Hussein said the decision should reflect Kurdish consensus. He added that this step could support the implementation of constitutional Article 140.
Ali Hussein concluded by reaffirming the KDP’s commitment to unity. He stressed that cooperation among Kurdish parties remains vital. Ali Hussein said protecting the Kurdistan Region’s position requires joint decision-making.
