Kurdistan Nineth Cabinet Invests $178 Million in Water Safety Projects

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has allocated nearly 266 billion IQD for strategic water safety projects across the region. During the current cabinet term, nine dams and 23 reservoirs have been constructed, while 58 additional reservoirs are in various stages of implementation. These projects are designed to store up to 253 million cubic meters of water, improving supply reliability and supporting agriculture, livestock, and tourism.

The initiative forms part of the KRG’s broader strategy to protect water security while addressing climate change challenges and drought risks. By securing water resources, the government aims to provide stable access for residents, farmers, and local ecosystems. Officials note that these efforts will also support tourism by maintaining water levels in lakes and reservoirs that serve as popular destinations.

Sasan Aouni, the KRG Minister of Municipalities and Tourism, said these projects will ensure that no city or town in Kurdistan will face severe water shortages in the next two years. He emphasized that the government is committed to mitigating the effects of drought and climate variability while expanding water infrastructure.

In addition to constructing dams and reservoirs, the KRG continues to implement major water projects to address long-term shortages. Several additional projects are planned, aiming to enhance water distribution and storage across urban and rural areas. These investments demonstrate the government’s dedication to sustainable water management and the welfare of the region’s population.
