Kurdistan: Peter Galbraith Says No Baghdad Government Can Form Without Kurds

Former US diplomat Peter Galbraith stressed that no government in Baghdad can form without Kurdish participation. He said Kurdish parties hold decisive political weight, and their role shapes every major step in the political process. Moreover, he emphasized that the Kurdistan Democratic Party’s electoral strength creates a mathematical necessity in coalition building.

Galbraith highlighted President Masoud Barzani’s constitutional demands and called them fair, legal, and essential for political stability. He said Barzani’s position reflects long-standing agreements that define the relationship between Baghdad and the Kurdistan Region. In addition, he noted that full constitutional implementation strengthens unity and prevents future disputes.

He explained that Kurdish engagement ensures balance within Iraq’s political structure. He argued that any attempt to exclude the Kurds will lead to deadlock and deepen existing tensions. Furthermore, he urged political leaders in Baghdad to respect previous commitments and maintain constructive dialogue with the Kurdistan Region.

Galbraith also pointed to the current political landscape. He said shifting alliances and internal divisions increase the importance of Kurdish influence. He stated that the KDP’s parliamentary presence plays a crucial role in shaping decisions on governance, economic reforms, and national security.

He encouraged continued coordination between Erbil and key international partners. He said strong cooperation supports stability, protects democratic processes, and strengthens long-term development.

Galbraith concluded by urging all sides to approach negotiations with sincerity. He said meaningful partnership offers the only path to a stable and functional government.
