Prime Minister Masrour Barzani described the Kurdistan Region as a shining home of coexistence. He made the statement during an event celebrating the 1,700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea. The event carried the theme “Unity: Dialogue and Communication.”
Barzani said protecting coexistence remains one of the government’s highest priorities. He stressed that Kurdistan will always serve as a shining home of coexistence. He pointed to new initiatives designed to strengthen harmony among religious and cultural groups.
Among the initiatives are plans to expand Syriac-language education across the Kurdistan Region. Barzani also confirmed plans to construct new churches. He explained that these projects guarantee freedom of belief and support minority rights.
The Council of Nicaea, first convened in 325 CE by Emperor Constantine, played a major role in shaping Christian doctrine. It introduced the Nicene Creed, affirming Christ’s divinity and creating new structures for church governance. Organizers of the Kurdistan event said this history still resonates today.
Barzani explained that the Kurdistan Region is home to more than two million people from minority groups. These include Christians, Yazidis, Turkmens, and Shabaks. He praised their contributions to Kurdistan’s identity. He added that their presence enriches society and reflects the shining home of coexistence that Kurdistan has become.
Observers noted that Barzani’s speech sends a message of reassurance at a time of regional challenges. By highlighting education, church construction, and community rights, the government seeks to show its commitment to pluralism.
Religious leaders and community representatives welcomed Barzani’s words. They said continued dialogue and new initiatives will protect Kurdistan’s social fabric.
The anniversary of the Council of Nicaea offered a platform for unity and reflection. Barzani used the moment to present Kurdistan as a safe place for diversity and a regional example of coexistence.
