Kurdistan PM Barzani Meets Australian Ambassador to Strengthen Ties

Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani met with Glenn Miles, Australia’s Ambassador to Iraq, to discuss ways to enhance bilateral relations and address political developments in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.

During the meeting, the officials reviewed the overall situation in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq. They stressed the importance of maintaining stability and continued dialogue between Erbil and Baghdad to resolve disputes according to the Iraqi constitution.

The upcoming Iraqi parliamentary elections were also a key topic. Prime Minister Barzani and Ambassador Miles agreed that the elections must be conducted peacefully, transparently, and democratically, without violence, interference, or political pressure.

Australia has maintained long-standing friendly relations with the Kurdistan Region, based on shared democratic values, security cooperation, and humanitarian support. Canberra played an important role in backing the Kurdish Peshmerga forces during the fight against ISIS by providing military training and assistance as part of the international coalition.

Beyond security, Australia has contributed to humanitarian and development programs in the Kurdistan Region, especially initiatives assisting internally displaced persons and refugees.

Both sides have also explored opportunities to expand cooperation in trade, agriculture, education, and renewable energy.

The meeting reaffirmed a mutual commitment to deepening relations and strengthening collaboration to promote peace, stability, and sustainable development across Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.
