The Kurdistan Journalists Syndicate (KJS) has called for safe and professional media coverage during Iraq’s parliamentary election campaign. In a statement, the Syndicate urged political parties, candidates, and government institutions to avoid any violations against journalists and to respect their role as a key pillar of democracy in the Kurdistan Region.
The KJS emphasized that journalists should be able to report freely without facing intimidation, harassment, or physical threats. It highlighted that protecting media personnel during the campaign is “a measure of freedom and democracy” and a crucial element for ensuring transparent electoral processes.
The Syndicate also called on media outlets to refrain from publishing content that could escalate political or social tensions. Journalists were reminded to carry official press IDs, wear safety vests, and promptly report any violations or threats encountered during the campaign period.
Iraq’s parliamentary election campaign began on October 3 and will continue until November 8, ahead of the vote scheduled for November 11. The KJS stressed that collaboration between political entities, the electoral commission, and media professionals is vital for creating a safe environment for reporting.
Observers note that journalists’ safety remains a pressing concern in Iraq, making these precautions and professional standards essential for maintaining both press freedom and public trust. Ensuring security for media personnel allows citizens to access accurate information during the election period.
