Kurdistan Region security forces arrested three wanted individuals on Sunday evening. Consequently, officials transferred the suspects to federal authorities as part of Iraq’s expanding anti-corruption campaign. The joint operation took place at approximately 8:00 p.m. in the city of Erbil. Furthermore, the arrests responded to an official request from the Iraqi government and the Federal Integrity Commission.
Security forces identified the suspects as Ziyad al-Janabi, Hind al-Abbasi, and Mohammed al-Mayahi. Investigators accuse the three individuals of public fund embezzlement and corruption. Therefore, the Kurdistan Region authorities completed all legal procedures before transferring custody. Afterward, Iraqi federal security forces officially took charge of the three suspects.
The entire operation followed strict legal and constitutional guidelines. Specifically, the regional forces waited for nearly an hour at the Sherawa checkpoint. Meanwhile, officers finalized the transfer process and the necessary legal formalities. Subsequently, the regional forces handed the suspects over to the relevant Iraqi authorities.
This specific operation signals a broader policy change. For instance, the Kurdistan Regional Government now fully cooperates with Baghdad. Regional leaders plan to apprehend any corruption suspect hiding in Erbil, Sulaimani, or Duhok.
Earlier on Sunday, federal authorities announced the arrests of 47 other prominent figures. This group includes members of parliament and senior officials facing major corruption charges. Coordinated security operations targeted these individuals within Baghdad’s Green Zone and several other provinces.
The Federal Integrity Commission confirmed that the raids occurred under direct court orders. The judiciary, executive, and legislative branches provided full support for the sweeps. Additionally, the commission pledged that investigations would proceed transparently. Ultimately, the government intends to prosecute all suspects in accordance with the law.
