The Kurdistan Region Presidency has reiterated its strong support for Palestinian self-determination during discussions at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York. In a statement, the Presidency stressed that the Kurdistan Region attaches great importance to international and UN-level deliberations on Palestine. It reaffirmed its consistent position that warfare and violence cannot resolve the conflict.
The statement emphasized that true peace requires dialogue, justice, and coexistence. “As a nation that has endured numerous sacrifices for our freedom and rights, we honor the struggle and sacrifices of the people of Palestine in their quest for freedom,” the Presidency declared.
The Kurdistan Region also highlighted its longstanding ties with Palestine, recalling that Erbil has hosted a Palestinian representative office for decades. This presence, the statement noted, symbolizes solidarity and shared aspirations for freedom and dignity.
The Presidency underlined that lasting peace in the Middle East can only be achieved by ceasing hostilities and ensuring justice in line with international law. It argued that this approach is essential for regional stability and prosperity.
The renewed message of support comes amid global focus on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict at this year’s UNGA. Leaders worldwide are debating both humanitarian and political aspects of the crisis. By restating its stance, the Kurdistan Region seeks to align itself with broader international efforts to promote peace and human rights.
The statement followed a major diplomatic shift, when the UK, Canada, and Australia officially recognized the State of Palestine. This move, despite opposition from the United States and Israel, was part of a wider effort to end the war in Gaza and support a two-state solution. The Kurdistan Region’s position echoes this global trend, stressing that international recognition and dialogue are vital steps toward lasting peace.
By reaffirming its position at the UN, the Kurdistan Region has once again highlighted its vision of peace, coexistence, and respect for human rights as the foundation for solving regional conflicts.
