U.S. diplomat Zalmay Khalilzad praised the conduct of Iraq’s recent parliamentary elections, noting that they proceeded smoothly and peacefully across the country. He emphasized the importance of the elections in strengthening democratic institutions and promoting political stability in the region.
Khalilzad also highlighted the remarkable performance of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), led by President Masoud Barzani. He pointed out that preliminary results show the KDP securing more than one million votes, reflecting strong support from the Kurdish population. He called this outcome a testament to the party’s long-standing commitment to representing Kurdish rights and advancing regional stability.
The diplomat underlined the significance of high voter turnout and transparent processes in reinforcing confidence in Iraq’s democratic system. He noted that citizens across Kurdistan and other provinces played a key role in ensuring credible and fair elections.
