Kurdistan Was Victorious in Cup Final, Says PM Barzani

Prime Minister Masrour Barzani praised both Duhok SC and Zakho SC after their intense all-Kurdistan showdown in the Iraq Cup final, declaring that Kurdistan was victorious. His comments followed Duhok’s 5-3 win in a dramatic penalty shootout, after 120 minutes of goalless play.

The historic final between two Kurdish clubs captured the attention of fans across the Kurdistan Region. In a post shared on social media, the Prime Minister congratulated both teams for reaching the top spots in the prestigious national tournament.

“Congratulations to both the Duhok and Zakho teams for winning first and second place in the Iraq Cup,” Barzani wrote. “I wish continued success for both teams. The important thing is that Kurdistan was victorious.”

His message resonated widely, especially as it emphasized unity and pride in Kurdish sports. Kurdistan was victorious quickly gained traction among fans and media outlets, highlighting the symbolic importance of an all-Kurdistan final.

The final match, held in a packed stadium, ended in a 0-0 draw after full time and extra time. Both teams displayed determination, discipline, and resilience throughout the 120 minutes. Defenses stayed sharp, and goalkeepers stood strong, denying every attempt.

When the game moved to penalties, the tension reached its peak. Duhok SC stepped up with calm focus, converting five of their attempts. Zakho SC, despite their valiant performance, missed one shot, allowing Duhok to claim the title.

This win marked a major achievement for Duhok SC, their first Iraq Cup title in club history. Yet Prime Minister Barzani’s words made clear that both teams brought pride to the region. His focus on unity through sport was echoed in celebrations across Kurdistan.

Fans in both Duhok and Zakho flooded the streets, waving flags and chanting for their clubs. Even though Duhok secured the trophy, Zakho supporters celebrated reaching the final — a rare feat that further raised the region’s football profile.

Kurdistan was victorious became more than a phrase. It became a message of shared achievement. The Prime Minister’s words reminded everyone that sport has the power to unite communities, even through fierce competition.

This all-Kurdistan final in the Iraq Cup may be remembered for its winner, but it will also be remembered for the unity it inspired. Both Duhok SC and Zakho SC walked away with pride, and Kurdistan’s presence in national football has never looked stronger.
