Masoud Barzani, leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), met with Mahmoud Meslat, co-chair of the Syrian Democratic Council (SDC), in Erbil. The meeting focused on the latest developments in Syria and the future of Kurdish-Arab relations.
Barzani and Meslat agreed that dialogue offers the best path forward. They stressed that political parties in Syria must rely on talks and mutual acceptance. They explained that unity is essential to overcome obstacles and prevent new conflicts.
The SDC, which acts as the political wing of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), plays a central role in Rojava’s future. After major political changes in Damascus, Kurdish coalitions accelerated unity efforts. In January, Barzani also hosted SDF commander Mazloum Abdi in Erbil to advance negotiations.
Earlier this year, Rojava leaders and the Syrian interim government reached a deal. It aimed to integrate civil and military institutions into one system. However, tensions grew after Damascus canceled follow-up talks, blaming Rojava for holding a minority unity conference in Hasaka.
Recent clashes in Aleppo province worsened the situation. Both sides accused each other of violating ceasefire terms. Despite these tensions, Barzani and Meslat emphasized that disagreements should not trigger violence between Kurds and Arabs.
Meslat stated that civil war would harm all sides and block unity. He also confirmed Barzani’s promise that the Kurdistan Region stands ready to support Syria and Rojava in every possible way.
