The Middle East Research Institute (MERI) has opened its annual forum in Erbil, bringing together key policymakers, academics, and international experts. The two-day event focuses on regional developments, governance challenges, and policy cooperation across the Middle East.
MERI President Dlawer Ala’Aldeen explained that organizing the forum required major coordination with influential figures. He noted that the goal is to offer clear insights into recent events and the region’s future direction. According to Ala’Aldeen, the forum continues to grow in importance each year as more decision-makers and researchers join discussions that shape both regional and national strategies.
The forum features high-profile speakers, including Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani, Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani, and Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) leader Bafel Talabani. Several officials and international policymakers are also participating, highlighting the event’s wide political reach and intellectual influence.
Although the event coincides with the election campaign season, Ala’Aldeen clarified that the timing was unintentional. He emphasized that MERI holds its forum every October, aiming to separate political campaigning from policy dialogue. He also stressed that the discussions center on governance, reforms, and strategy, rather than electoral competition.
With legislative elections approaching, the MERI Forum offers an important platform for dialogue about leadership, policy reform, and long-term stability in the region.
