Authorities in Erbil have detained a well-known model and actress following backlash over a promotional video at a local gas station. Samarand Dara, the model in question, appeared in an advertisement where she poured fuel while saying, “We pump gas and don’t get killed.”
The video sparked outrage, especially since it circulated just days after a tragic fuel-related tragedy in Erbil killed three people. Many viewed the timing as insensitive. Shortly after the controversy erupted, officials launched an investigation.
A senior administrative source confirmed that authorities have now closed the gas station involved. They also issued an arrest warrant for Samrand, who will face legal proceedings. In response, the model posted a follow-up video apologizing.
“Don’t worry, it’s not intentional,” she said. “I spoke without full knowledge of the killings—I didn’t know the details. If I had known, I wouldn’t have done it.” She also expressed remorse to the victims’ families, insisting she never meant to offend.
Samrand, originally from Eastern Kurdistan (Iran), has worked as an actress in the Kurdistan Region and recently gained attention as a model. The incident has stirred debate over social media responsibility and advertising ethics.
