Nechirvan Barzani: Drone Strikes Endanger Kurdistan Economy

President Nechirvan Barzani raised serious concerns on Wednesday about the growing threat of drone attacks in the Kurdistan Region. He stressed that repeated strikes on vital oil infrastructure endanger not only local security but also the broader economic future of the entire area.

During a high-level meeting in Erbil, Barzani shared these concerns with Vice Admiral Edward Algren, the UK’s Senior Defence Advisor for the Middle East and North Africa. The British Consul General and several other advisors also attended the discussion.

Barzani emphasized the direct link between these attacks and the economic well-being of cities across the Kurdistan Region. He explained that oil facilities in places like Erbil, Duhok, and Sulaimani are central to the Region’s economy. Any disruption could trigger serious financial setbacks and long-term instability.

He also highlighted the risks posed to foreign investments. Investors need security and predictability. Without both, they will avoid key sectors such as oil, gas, and infrastructure development.

In response, Admiral Algren reaffirmed the UK’s support for stability in the Region. He stressed the importance of protecting strategic economic assets. Both sides agreed on the need for more coordination to prevent future attacks and strengthen defense measures.

The meeting concluded with shared concern over regional tensions and their impact on economic development in Kurdistan.
