Newborn Injured by Doctor’s Long Nails in Erbil

A newborn in Erbil suffered injuries caused by a doctor’s long nails during delivery at a maternity hospital. The incident sparked concern over the adherence to health and hygiene standards by medical staff.

The baby’s father, speaking anonymously, described the situation: “We brought our child to the maternity hospital, and the birth seemed normal. Initially, we were happy that both mother and baby were healthy. But when we examined the baby, we saw injuries around the eyes, head, and neck, as if the cord had scratched him.”

He further explained that he had noticed the doctor’s long nails, which caused significant harm and nearly threatened the baby’s eyesight.

Health officials confirmed the case and stressed safety measures. Dilovan Mohammed, General Director of Health in Erbil, said, “We are coordinating with the hospital administration. Midwives must manage the long nails properly to prevent injuries. Leaving it too long violates health procedures and endangers newborns.”

The incident highlights the importance of strict adherence to childbirth protocols. Hospitals in the Kurdistan Region must reinforce staff training to avoid similar accidents. Officials urge parents to monitor newborn care closely and report concerns immediately.
