ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Kurdistan Region PM Masrour Barzani on Wednesday marked the 35th anniversary of the 1991 Kurdistan Uprising. He highlighted its historic role in shaping the Kurdistan Region’s institutions.
In a message marking the occasion, PM Masrour Barzani said the anniversary represents a defining moment in the Kurdish people’s struggle for freedom and self-governance.
He explained that the uprising laid the foundation for the region’s political and administrative institutions. As a result, the Kurdistan Region was able to build the system of governance that exists today.
Furthermore, Barzani paid tribute to those who took part in the uprising. He also honored the memory of the martyrs who lost their lives during the struggle.
At the same time, the prime minister stressed the importance of unity. He said national solidarity is essential to protect the achievements gained since the uprising.
Moreover, Barzani warned that these accomplishments must be safeguarded for future generations.
Finally, he reaffirmed that the Kurdistan Regional Government remains committed to strengthening democratic institutions. He also stressed the importance of stability and continued development across the region.
The 1991 Kurdistan Uprising anniversary is commemorated every year. It marks the mass revolt against the former Iraqi regime. Ultimately, the uprising led to the establishment of self-rule in the Kurdistan Region.
